As most births in low income countries occur in the community or at a peripheral facility providing only basic emergency obstetric care, it is critical to a woman’s survival that her condition be managed at point of care or stabilized until she reaches higher level facilities. In low-resource settings that are often not equipped for surgery or blood transfusions, other intervention options are urgently needed. Uterine balloon tamponade (UBT) has become increasingly recognized as an effective and safe second-line treatment for intractable PPH.

The Sinapi UBT has been designed with extensive input from national and global maternal health experts. The collaboration offers potential for taking a local innovation to international markets.
